The first job - MuSigma

After being rejected twice on campus, on my third attempt I did actually get through MuSigma at an off-campus drive which I travelled to. It was the company at that time in college I really wanted to work at. I had a flair for mathematics since childhood and I had a perception that solving business problems with data would be fun for me. And it was!

The Atmosphere & Culture was brilliant for a fresher out of college

It was a great atmosphere to work at musigma and the energy levels were super high. I met extremely smart individuals, great mentors and fun coworkers together working to solve interesting business problems.

I was lucky to have mentors and managers who instilled a great work ethic into me, and it was a great place to be right after college with just enough structure to keep me accountable and keeping the problem statements interesting enough to have me focus a lot of my energy in solving those.

Projects

The main project was working for a credit cards portfolio of a bank. It was a pilot project and hence the problem statement was not clear enough at first. I spent time in learning about the workings of a credit card, the different offerings, payment behaviours of customers, and drawing insights of it. Parallelly, it was the first time handling large amounts of data, learning how to clean and interpret it.

Eventually we were able to find different factors/variables which uniquely identified different behavioural cohorts of the bank's customers.

Learnings out of the first job

  • How to think of solving problems?

    • It was a lot of practice of solving problems and case studies and learning how to breakdown things into small pieces and questioning everything

    • Musigma had amazing branding of its own

    • Being responsible, owning my work and being accountable

    • Being a team player

    • Communication, presenting and visualising ideas using data. Talking to clients and how to understand their requirements
